Kids flat back earrings: a quick guide for parents
Flat back earrings swap the usual butterfly back for a small flat disc that twists onto the post. Nothing pokes into the back of the ear, so they stay comfortable when your child lies down, leans back in a car seat or pulls on a jumper.
Why parents choose flat backs
- Comfy to sleep inThe 4mm disc sits flat against the lobe, so there's no sharp post end to dig in at night.
- Harder to loseThe back twists on and stays put through PE, play and hair brushing, unlike push-on butterfly backs.
- Kind to sensitive ears316L surgical stainless steel with a PVD finish, so it won't tarnish or turn skin green.
- WaterproofThey can stay in for bath time, swimming lessons and the beach.
How the twist-lock back works
- 1Put the post through the ear from the front.
- 2Hold the earring and turn the flat back clockwise until it sits snugly behind the lobe.
- 3To take it out, hold the front and turn the back anticlockwise.
💡 Give the back a gentle twist every week or so to keep it snug, especially after swimming.

🏫 New piercings and school
Wait until a new piercing has fully healed, and follow your piercer's aftercare advice, before changing to fashion earrings. When you're ready, our first earrings are small, simple studs that are easy to wear every day. Many UK schools allow one pair of small plain studs, and our School Safe edit sticks to simple shapes, but do check your school's own rules.
🧼 Looking after them
Wipe them now and then with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water, then dry them before storing in the gift box. If a hole hasn't had an earring in for a while, gently re-open it with a thin, non-threaded post first.
Kids flat back earrings: your questions answered
Can kids sleep in flat back earrings?
Yes. That's what they're designed for. The flat disc sits against the back of the lobe, so there's no sharp post end to dig in when your child lies on their side. Check their ears every so often, and take the earrings out if an ear looks red or sore.
Are flat back earrings good for children with sensitive ears?
Our flat backs are made from 316L surgical stainless steel with a PVD finish, which is hard-wearing and won't tarnish or turn skin green. That makes them a good choice for most sensitive ears. If your child has a known metal allergy, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
What age are kids flat back earrings for?
Any age once the piercing has fully healed. Our kids' range is grouped by age: little ones (3 to 7), big kids (8 to 12) and teens. Smaller children usually suit studs of around 3 to 6mm.
Can they wear them swimming and in the bath?
Yes. They're waterproof, so they can stay in for the bath, swimming lessons and the sea. After swimming, give the back a gentle twist to check it's still snug.
How do I put in and take out flat back earrings?
Put the post through the ear from the front, then turn the flat back clockwise until it's snug. To take it out, hold the front of the earring still and turn the back anticlockwise. It's easiest with your child sitting still and good light.
What's the difference between flat back, butterfly back and screw back earrings?
A butterfly back pushes onto the post and leaves the post end at the back of the ear. A screw back twists on for extra security, usually with a small ball. A flat back also twists on, but finishes with a flat disc, so it's the most comfortable for sleeping. Read our full comparison.
Which post thickness should I choose?
Choose 1mm (18g) if you're not sure, as it suits most ear piercings. Go for 0.8mm (20g) for smaller or snug holes, or 1.2mm (16g) for piercings made with a thicker starter stud.
Are flat back earrings allowed at school?
It depends on the school. Many UK schools allow one pair of small plain studs, and some ask for earrings to come out for PE. Our School Safe edit sticks to small, simple shapes.
What happens if a back comes loose or a stud breaks?
Every pair has a 2-year warranty that covers faults such as tarnishing or pieces falling out. You can also buy spare flat backs to keep at home.
