Sore lobes, itchy ears, a bit of redness by teatime? It's usually not your kid's ears that are the problem. It's the earrings. Here's why some earrings make ears grumpy, what hypoallergenic actually means, and the comfy pairs we'd reach for first.
- Cheap earrings usually irritate because of the metal, a coating that wears off, or a back that rubs.
- Look for hypoallergenic, tarnish free materials and a flat back that sits snug behind the lobe.
- Our comfiest kids picks: White Pearl, Simple and Star flat backs, from £21.
- Red, swollen or sore ears that don't settle once the earrings are out? Have a chat with a pharmacist or your GP.

Why do some earrings make ears sore?
It's usually one of these three. Sometimes all three at once.
Lots of cheap earrings contain nickel, which is one of the most common causes of itchy, red skin.
Tell-tale sign: itching and redness right where the earring touches.
A thin shiny layer over a mystery base metal looks fine at first. Then it rubs off and skin meets whatever's underneath.
Tell-tale sign: fine for a week or two, then suddenly sore. Green ears too.
A sharp post poking out behind the ear, or a clip that pinches, can make lobes tender all on its own.
Tell-tale sign: soreness behind the lobe, worse after lying on it.
What does hypoallergenic actually mean?
In plain English, it means made to be less likely to cause a reaction. That's it. It isn't a promise that nobody will ever react, because every ear is different.
So don't stop at the label. Check what the earring's actually made from, back and post included, and whether it's going to stay looking the same after a few weeks of wear. If it tarnishes, something on the surface is changing, and that's rarely good news for sensitive skin.
What to look for

- Hypoallergenic materials. All the way through, not just the pretty bit on the front.
- Tarnish free. If it stays shiny, it isn't breaking down against the skin.
- A flat back. A smooth disc that sits snug behind the lobe, so nothing pokes or scratches.
- A back that stays put. Ours twist-lock on, so they're not wiggling about and rubbing all day.
- Small and light. Heavy earrings drag on the lobe. Little studs are much kinder.
Flat back vs screw back: what's behind the ear
Every Delilah stud has one of these two backs. Both twist on, so they stay put. The flat one is the comfiest, the ball one is the most secure.

You won't find butterfly backs here. They loosen, slip off, and leave the end of the post sticking into the side of the head. Not ideal for ears that are already a bit sensitive. Want the full lowdown? Read our flat back vs screw back vs butterfly back guide.
Our comfiest picks for sensitive little ears
These are the pairs we'd start with if your kid's ears have been playing up. All hypoallergenic, all tarnish free, all waterproof.
A soft faux pearl on a twist-lock flat back. Goes with school uniform, party dresses and everything in between.
£23, gold or silver.
A small polished half ball. About as plain and gentle as an earring gets, which is exactly the point.
£21, gold or silver.
A tiny 4mm star for kids who want something a bit more fun, without anything big or heavy.
£22, gold or silver.
For busy kids and huggie fans
Got a kid who's always on the go, or one who's decided studs are a bit babyish? These two are kind to sensitive ears too.
- Screw Back Studs (£21). Smooth little spheres front and back that twist on tight. Brilliant for PE and the kids who can't stop fiddling.
- Heart Huggies (£23). A snug little hoop with a cute heart charm. Light enough to forget they're wearing them.
So which one's right for your kid?
Grown ups with sensitive ears too?
You're definitely not alone. Plenty of parents only find out their own ears are fussy when they start shopping for their kids. White Pearl and Simple Flat Backs work just as well on grown up ears, especially in a second hole. When to see a pharmacist or GP
Swapping to comfier earrings sorts most sore ears out. But if your kid's ear is properly red, swollen, hot, weeping or really painful, or it doesn't settle once the earrings are out, get it checked by a pharmacist or your GP. We know earrings, not ears, so we'll leave that bit to them.
Got a fresh piercing? Leave the starter studs in and ask your piercer when it's ready to swap. And if an ear's reacted before, give it a proper break before trying a new pair.

Your questions, answered
Why do my child's ears go red with some earrings?
Usually it's the metal (often nickel), a cheap coating that's worn off, or a back that rubs. Switching to hypoallergenic, tarnish free earrings with a flat back sorts it for most kids.
What does hypoallergenic actually mean?
It means made to be less likely to cause a reaction. It isn't a guarantee, because every ear is different, so check what the earring is made from, back and post included.
Are flat back earrings better for sensitive ears?
For most kids, yes. The smooth disc sits snug behind the lobe with nothing poking out, so there's much less rubbing. Ours twist-lock on too, so they don't wiggle about.
Can they wear them in the bath or shower?
Yep, our earrings are waterproof and tarnish free. For swimming lessons, though, it's sensible to pop them out so nothing goes missing in the pool.
When should I see a GP about a reaction?
If the ear is very red, swollen, hot, weeping or painful, or it doesn't settle once the earrings are out, speak to a pharmacist or your GP. For anything about a new piercing, ask your piercer.
Do you have earrings for adults with sensitive ears?
We do. Lots of grown ups wear our flat backs, and we've got a whole guide for sensitive adult skin too.
