Silver hoops for kids: why steel works
Our silver hoops are solid 316L surgical stainless steel all the way through. There's no plating, so nothing can rub off, and they keep their shine through swimming, bath time and everyday wear.
Steel or sterling silver?
Sterling silver is lovely but soft, and it tarnishes, so it needs polishing. Surgical steel looks the same, is tougher and doesn't tarnish, which suits busy kids who keep their earrings in.
Picking a size
8 to 10mm huggies suit little ones. Big kids and teens often go for 11 to 15mm. See the full size chart on our kids hoops page.
Your questions, answered
Are these silver hoops sterling silver?
No. They're 316L surgical stainless steel with a natural silver colour. Unlike sterling silver, steel doesn't tarnish and doesn't need polishing.
Are they OK for sensitive ears?
They're made from 316L surgical stainless steel, and our gold pieces have an 18k gold PVD finish, so they won't tarnish or turn ears green. That suits most sensitive ears. Many pairs are also nickel free, and our nickel free guide shows which. If your child has a known metal allergy, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
Can my child swim in them?
Yes. They're waterproof, so they can stay in for the pool, the bath and the sea.
How do the hoops close?
A hinged bar clicks into the clasp. There's no separate back to lose, and they stay shut until you open them.
